Evaluation of an IoT-Based Wireless Detection System in Water Pipeline Grids

🏆 Awarded Second Place – Poster Presentation Competition

Project Overview

Engineered an intelligent, telemetry-driven infrastructure monitoring platform designed to perform real-time pipeline grid fluid diagnostics, automated leak detection, pipeline isolation, and cloud synchronized telemetry visualization. This project addresses critical asset management challenges in smart-grid utilities.

System Architecture & Engineering Approach

The development focused on integrating edge computing nodes with an active industrial sensor matrix to identify pressure abnormalities, volumetric flow rates, and localized anomalies. By leveraging high frequency polling and embedded logic, the architecture provides immediate pipeline isolation capabilities to mitigate resource loss and preserve infrastructure integrity.

Core Technical Execution

  • Edge Computing & Hardware Control: Configured ESP32 microcontrollers to interface with multi sensor arrays, balancing power distribution protocols and signal stability.

  • Cloud Telemetry Pipeline: Deployed secure data streams to link edge networks with ThingSpeak cloud engines, creating instantaneous, multi-variable analytical dashboards.

  • Automated Diagnostics & Mitigation: Developed localized firmware routines in C++ to autonomously identify pressure drop dependencies, trigger isolation valves, and log fault telemetry coordinates.

  • Smart Infrastructure Validation: Successfully presented and defended the system engineering parameters, earning second-place honors within a highly competitive technical presentation cohort.

A Note of Gratitude & Supervision

  • Academic Supervision: This achievement would not have been possible without the continuous guidance, support, and encouragement of my supervisor, Nagham Saeed. Her deep technical expertise and valuable feedback played a significant role throughout the lifecycle of the project.

  • Development Support: I express my sincere gratitude to Rimcy P Alikunju for her critical assistance and support during the hardware development and prototyping phases of this project.

Professional Outlook

This comprehensive deployment has deeply strengthened my domain expertise in IoT, embedded systems, and smart infrastructure technologies. I look forward to applying these advanced capabilities to future enterprise projects and professional engineering opportunities.
